Southwest Airlines announced more service to Philadelphia — even before their first flight there later this year. “The response to Southwest’s initial announcement of flights has been overwhelming,” explained Southwest Chairman Herb Kelleher. Competing directly against the long-time Philadelphia hub for USAir, Southwest is adding 14 more daily nonstop departures effective 6 July, he said. The 14 additional daily nonstop flights will go to the following cities: Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, Houston Hobby, Los Angeles International, Manchester (NH), New Orleans, Raleigh/Durham, Tampa Bay and West Palm Beach. Southwest previously announced it was beginning its Philadelphia service 9 May, Introductory flights cost as low as $49, one-way (to Manchester). The highest priced flights are $299.
