Spain to lift Gibraltar ship ban
Spain seems likely to drop its ban on cruise ships that have visited Gibraltar – at least for a few more months.
As reported by News From Abroad, a dispute between Spain and Gibraltar hit the headlines in May when foreign ships that had visited the territory were told they would not be allowed to dock in mainland ports.
The Guardian reports that many companies responded by dropping Gibraltar from their itineraries, with the territory therefore being denied the income created by as many as 20 cruise ship visits a year.
But the newspaper, quoting its Spanish counterpart El Mundo, states that Spain plans to drop the ban and will extend a three-month “moratorium” that officially expired on Tuesday.
The suspension will now remain lifted until November, the Daily Telegraph states, and is likely to be dropped altogether in an effort to improve relations between Spain, Gibraltar and Britain.
