Sydney’s beaches have been plagued by thieves to such an extent this year that police officers have had to hand out their own clothes to stranded – and embarrassed – sunbathers. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, thieves on the city’s southern beaches have adopted the tactic of waiting until their victim goes for a swim before making off with their bags. Police Inspector Steve Corry is quoted as saying: “People go for a swim and when they come back everything – their bag, wallet, mobile phone – is gone; even their clothes. They are then left on the sand in only their cossie. If there is a change of weather they can get quite cold.” The newspaper reports that beaches in the Miranda area are now patrolled by undercover police officers, with life guards also keeping a look-out. Insp Corry added: “We are warning people to take care of their property at the beach. Don’t take valuables to the beach and try to have someone stay with your property while you go for a swim.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad Ltd
