The disappearing seashells of Mauritius
The signs of climate change are being felt in Mauritius in a surprising way. The famed beaches are losing their seashells.
According to oceanographer Vassen Kauppaymuthoo, the number of seashells has decreased by 60% in the last 30 years. Climate change, overfishing, tourism and pollution are mostly to blame. Mauritius is especially vulnerable to climate change.
