Thousands of BA workers put back on furlough

British Airways has put back thousands of employees on furlough, due to the delay in a meaningful travel rebound.

Staff were brought back ahead of the summer peak travel season as the UK eased travel restrictions in mid-May but with few green list destinations available, it proved to be short-lived.

Furloughed workers include management positions.

"Like many companies we’re using the furlough scheme to protect jobs during this unprecedented crisis. However, it’s vital the government follows its risk-based framework to reopen international travel as soon as possible," a BA spokesperson said.

It called for allowing low-risk countries, like the US, on the green ‘at the next available opportunity.’

In a letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, trade association Airlines UK called for furlough support for aviation sector workers to be extended until April next year.

BA chief Sean Doyle welcomed talks over opening up transatlantic flights to the US as ‘a step in the right direction’ but said the industry is ‘now at a critical point’ and action is needed immediately.
