Trackside arson disrupts Eurostar travellers
‘Frantic Friday’ has arrived with a bang.
The busiest travel day of the year so far has got off to a bad start for some delayed Heathrow fliers and Eurostar passengers.
Eurostar passengers were stuck at London St Pancras due to several Paris bound services cancelled.
Train services were halted for safety reasons due to ‘coordinated acts of malice.’
Fires were started beside train lines in northern France.
Authorities say it was a deliberate arson attempt and is coordinated.
“It’s probably a large-scale sabotage with some malicious acts, probably coordinating,” said French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera.
There are suspicions the aim is to disrupt the Paris Olympics.
Some Eurostar services are now operating but via other train lines which will add about 90 minutes to the journey time.
The company said about one in four services will be cancelled today.
Affected passengers can cancel and receive a refund.
“We encourage our customers to postpone their trip if possible,” Eurostar said.
