TUI makes contingency plans for Birmingham Airport strike

Holiday firm TUI issued a customer update ahead of a looming airport strike at Birmingham.

Contingency plans will be in place for passengers flying over the next few days.

Over 100 security officers and terminal engineers are set to strike this week.

The Unite union members are in a dispute over pay.

“We would like to reassure our customers that we are working with the airport on contingency plans to make their journey through the airport as smooth as possible,” TUI said.

“There will be measures in place to minimise disruption as much as possible.”

The airport strike will be ‘continuous.’

TUI said it will be shortly be informing passengers of the measures and issuing updates to their flight’s status.

The impact is expected to be felt harder after a recent High Court ruling.

Judges banned the use of agency workers during stoppages, meaning employers cannot recruit short term contract workers to cover.

“The only way this dispute will be resolved is with an acceptable offer from the company,” Unite said.

“Birmingham Airport is acting immediately, together with its airline partners, to limit the impact,” airport management said.

“We are asking customers to put as much hand luggage as possible into the aircraft hold.”

This will limit the time spent at pre-flight security checks, it says.

The airport strike could overlap with planned London Gatwick strikes for several days at the end of this month.
