Two tourists among dead in Mallorca restaurant collapse
Four people were killed, including two German tourists, after a bar and restaurant in Palma de Mallorca collapsed.
There are at least 16 more people injured, with some in a critical condition.
It happened around 8pm local time on Thursday.
Witnesses described it like ‘a bomb going off’ although there is no indication of an actual explosion.
The seafront Medusa Beach Club opened a new rooftop terrace the day before and during the collapse, it was reportedly crowded with revellers.
Police believe it may have caved in due to the number of people.
Two of the four people who died were German tourists.
At least five people have ‘very serious’ injuries.
Palma’s Deputy Mayor Javier Bonet said: “As well as the four fatalities, five of the injured are critical but stable.”
Several of the injured are thought to be foreign tourists.
Eder Garcia, head of the Palma Fire Brigade, said: “There are several nationalities and what we know is that most are not from Palma.”
“We expect many will be tourists.”
“The terrace collapsed, probably due to excess weight although it’s still under investigation.”
