UK close to joining EU Covid passport scheme
The UK is set to join the EU’s Covid vaccination scheme.
EU’s vaccine passport system is specifically for international travel and would streamline procedures for travel to and from Europe.
Talks between with EU officials are well advanced.
"Significant progress was made on a technical front, namely when it comes to the connection to the gateway, with aim of going live," an EU spokesperson told the Telegraph.
The system enables quick verification of a person’s Covid status at passenger check-in and border points.
It is used when crossing EU borders and domestically in some EU countries to gain access to venues and other facilities.
"Linking up to the EU’s Digital Covid Certificate scheme will enable us to digitally verify..each other’s Covid certificates to make journeys easier" the Foreign Office said.
The system spans dozens of countries including some outside the bloc.
