A Tokyo-bound flight was forced to return to Los Angeles four hours after take-off when it was discovered an ‘unauthorised person’ was on board.

All Nippon Airways flights ANA 175 left LAX at 11.36am local time Tuesday morning and returned at 7.33pm.

On board was singer John Legend and his model wife Chrissy Teigen, who live tweeted the events to her 9.2 million followers.

Her first tweet said: "A flying first for me: 4 hours into an 11-hour flight and we are turning around because we have a passenger who isn’t supposed to be on this plane.

"Why…why do we all gotta go back, I do not know."

She added: "I won’t be able to sleep until I know how this person figured out they were on the wrong flight.

"That’s all I ask. 150 people have been majorly inconvenienced, please, just tell me."

She claimed the passenger reportedly had a ticket issued by another airline and that police interviewed travellers who were seated near the passenger.

Eight hours and 20 minutes after taking off from LAX, the celebs and their fellow passengers were back.

"Why did we all get punished for this one person’s mistake? Why not just land in Tokyo and send the other person back? How is this a better idea, you ask? We all have the same questions," Teigen continued.

ANA said once the flight crew noticed the passenger boarded the wrong flight, the pilot decided to return to LAX.
