After batting off demands to quit for weeks, embattled Qantas chairman Richard Goyder will step down next year.
He will retire next year as part of a ‘board renewal plan.’
Goyder will retire in late 2024 as part of a larger Qantas’ executive shake-up.
Three other board members are standing down over the next few months.
“As a board, we acknowledge the significant reputational and customer service issues facing the group and recognise that accountability is required to restore trust,” Goyder said.
A new chair will be voted on at the next AGM, with five candidates including the new CEO in the running.
“Qantas has gone through an incredibly difficult period since our operation was grounded during the pandemic,” Goyder said.
“The recovery has not been easy, and mistakes were made.”
Financially the airline is in a strong position but its brand reputation has taken a beating in the past few months.
It is facing a number of legal challenges and lost a landmark case that ruled Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers.
