United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz has promised to dig deep from his own pocket to help the airline’s employees directly affected by Hurricane Harvey.

According to an internal letter to the workforce, Munoz has asked fellow workers to donate to United’s employee relief fund, and Munoz himself will match up to $1 million in contributions.

United has a large workforce of about 11,000 in the Houston area.

Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport is a major United hub which will remain closed until midday Thursday at the earliest.

"We know the crisis is far from over. We will be there every step of the way going forward. And we will remain committed long after the skies clear and the waters recede in order to help our communities rebuild, stronger than ever," Munoz wrote.

As reported on Travelmole, United set up a fundraising page on the Crowdrise platform seeking donations and is rewarding frequent flyers who donate with bonus MileagePlus points.
