US airlines pressure EU over non carbon emissions data

US airlines have quietly been lobbying EU officials over proposed rules on aircraft emissions reporting for airlines.

Airlines for America advocacy staff and representatives from US airlines met the European Commission’s climate task force team earlier this year.

The meeting was not recorded in the EU transparency register.

A freedom of information request shows that Airlines for America lobbied for  airlines flying outside of Europe not to be included in the proposed rules.

The draft rules require reporting of aircraft pollution beyond carbon dioxide.

“Non-CO2 emissions may account for up to two-thirds of the climate impacts of flying, and yet US airlines are trying to dodge accountability,” said nonprofit InfluenceMap, which shared the meeting minutes with the Guardian.

Besides CO2 aviation produces sulphur dioxide and water vapor emissions.

The effect of these emissions on the environment is still not fully known.

The proposal calls for the recording of data for flights within Europe from 2025 and for flights outside of Europe from 2027.

A4A has been lobbying for US airlines to be exempt even after 2027.

The International Air Transport Association agrees with A4A and questions whether reporting non-CO2 emissions will do any good for science.

“The commission essentially regulated this subject matter with the assumption that we know enough to move forward. But on such an important issue, putting the proverbial cart before the horse is not the way to progress,” IATA said.
