The US State Department has issued a new global terrorism alert for its citizens following the attack on the shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
A “worldwide caution” has been issued stressing concerns about terrorist threats to US citizens in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, including suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings and bombings.
It listed high-profile sporting events, residential areas, business offices, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, public areas, shopping malls and other tourist destinations where Americans gather in large numbers as possible targets.
The department specifically warned of an ongoing threat by a group called the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party in Europe, which it claims have stated its intent to commit further attacks following a bombing at a US embassy in Ankara, Turkey in February.
It said in Europe, there is a continuing threat "from unaffiliated persons planning attacks inspired by major terrorist organisations but conducted on an individual basis”.
