It appears through reports from Fiji that the Pacific island nation has escaped another damaging blow to its tourism industry, with little damage reported as a result of cyclone Daman moving away from the most populated area over the weekend, although there was significant damage on the island of Cikobia, the area around Nadi and Denraru escaped the worst of the storm.
With Fiji’s national carrier, Air Pacific and Pacific Blue both cancelling flights, although it appears an Air New Zealand flight did mange to get our before the storm struck, plans of thousands of travellers were severely disrupted.
Blue Lagoon and Captain Cook Cruises cancelled cruises and hotels were warned to expect winds of up to 250kms/hr with prior to the storm Fiji Islands Visitors Bureau warning that things could be very bad.
As it was, the storm changed course with the major tourist areas avoided.
Andrew Turnbull, owner of Tokoriki Island Resort told The Mole this morning that Tokoriki had escaped the storm without damage, and it was business as usual at Tokoriki and as far as he was aware, all the reports in the area.
He added, business is picking up again and we just don’t need any more hassle!
