WestJet pilot strike averted at last minute
Canadian airline WestJet has averted a pilots’ strike at the last minute.
A deal was reached with the union, avoiding industrial action that was due to begin today.
The Air Line Pilots Association said it approved a new agreement.
That will be put to the membership to vote on, and for now strike action is suspended.
Around 1,800 pilots at WestJet and budget subsidiary Swoop had been set to walk out.
However, it could still lead to disruption as the airline had grounded dozens of planes in anticipation of the strike.
The dispute is over pay, conditions and job security.
“We appreciate we were able to arrive at a deal, however we recognize the impact on our guests and appreciate their patience,” the airline said.
