White House now allowing cameras, tweets during tours

Thursday, 2 July 20153 min read

The White House has lifted a 40-year ban on taking pictures during public tours and is also allowing visitors to use social media during tours for the first time.

The change of heart was announced by the First Lady on a video posted to her Instagram account, announcing: "Big news! Starting today, we’re lifting the ban on cameras and photos on the @WhiteHouse public tour. Visitors are now able to take photos and keep those memories for a lifetime!"

The White House Historical Association said the original ban was imposed after people stopped often to take photos causing long lines to form.

Although cameras and live Tweeting is allowed with immediate effect, it "may not interfere with the enjoyment of other guests on the tour," a White house statement said.

Other restrictions also apply.

No flash photography and live streaming is allowed nor video cameras, cameras with long detachable lenses or tripods.

The dreaded selfie stick is also banned.

The White House wants visitors to share their photos on social media using the hashtag #WhiteHouseTour.
