12 people killed in shooting at Batman film

At least 12 people have been killed and around 50 injured in a shooting at a Batman film premiere in the Colorado capital of Denver.

Eye witnesses say a gunman wearing a gas mask, riot helmet, bullet proof vest and goggles opened fire during the late night showing of The Dark Knight Rises at a cinema complex in the suburb of Aurora.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man in a nearby car park nearby. He was reportedly in possession of a rifle and handgun and told police explosives were stored at his home.

The FBI, which is working with the police, claims there is no link to terrorism.

US President Barack Obama expressed his shock and sadness at the "horrific and tragic" shooting.

"We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded," he said.

"As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family."

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper said: "This is not only an act of extreme violence, it is also an act of depravity. It is beyond the power of words to fully express our sorrow this morning. Our prayers and condolences go first to the families of those killed, and we share the grief of everyone affected by this senseless event.

"We appreciate the swift work by local, state and federal law enforcement. Coloradans have a remarkable ability to support one another in times of crisis. This one of those times."
