From German-themed Christmas markets to skiing and snow tubing in the Laurel Highlands, there’s every reason to visit Pittsburgh this winter season.
City Celebrations
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
From 9-18 December, celebrate Pittsburgh’s favourite holiday tradition with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Highmark Holiday Pops. An array of carols, classics, sing-alongs and Santa Claus to kick off the Christmas season. Taking place at Heinz Hall, the artists are made up of The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, a very special guest and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater.
Pittsburgh’s Downtown Christmas market
Enjoy strolling through the Peoples Gas Holiday Market in Downtown Pittsburgh until 24 December to discover the perfect Christmas gifts. Inspired by the original German Christkindlmarket, Market Square is filled with more than 35 wooden chalets offering shoppers high-quality gifts.
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens presents Holiday Magic! Winter Flower Show and Light Garden until 8 January. This year’s theme of arctic adventure promises the biggest and best show yet, crammed with displays of holiday trees, topiaries and poinsettias plus a celebrated outdoor garden filled with LED lights.
Ice skating at the iconic PPG Place
At the UPMC Rink at PPG Place enjoy ice skating on the outdoor rink, which is open until 24 February. Located beneath the impressive, mirrored glass PPG Place buildings, it create a twinkling light display after dark.
Snowy Adventures
Skiing and snowboarding at Seven Springs Mountain Resort
A short drive outside of the city in Laurel Highlands, Seven Springs Mountain Resort is one of the largest Pennsylvania winter resorts and offers adventure for all the family. Experience skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and more. Skiers and snowboarders will find snow-packed slopes and innovative terrain parks, with challenges suited to all abilities. Beginners can learn a new skill at Seven Springs Snowsports School.
Snow tubing at Boyce Park
Encompassing more than 1,000 acres, Boyce Park offers the perfect escape in the winter for downhill skiing and snow tubing. The scenic park is a great location for all the family, and the surrounding trails offer plenty of places to explore whilst enjoying the views. The park has six runs for snow tubing which are steeper than most, with one consistent drop that allows for great speed. The snowtubing season lasts until mid-March and tickets may be purchased online in advance.
