A380 superjumbo forced to abort flight

A Singapore Airlines superjumbo A380 was forced to turn back to Singapore this morning after pilots reported a problem with one of its Rolls Royce engines.

In the latest in a series of scares involving the Airbus double-decker aircraft, pilots were forced to shut down one of the four engines, said Reuters.

SQ26 from Singapore to Frankfurt turned back just less than three hours into the flight and landed safely back at Singapore.

SIA said the engine will undergo thorough inspections in consultations with the engine manufacturer.

SIA experienced similar problems with an A380. That time it was forced to abort a flight from Singapore to Hong Kong when one of the four Rolls Royce engines shut down due to a surge and high vibrations.

That incident came nine months after a Rolls Royce engine on an A380 operated by Qantas Airways exploded midair.

SIA operates 16 A380s and has three more on order which are scheduled for delivery later this year.
