AA raises fares by £28
American Airlines is raising its fares across the board in a bid to offset increasing oil prices.
Return fares will increase by £28, which exceeds the fare increase of £20 introduced by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic earlier this week.
American is the first US carrier to introduce an international surcharge – so far the US airlines have added a $5 surcharge to their one-way domestic fares, but none has wanted to make the first move on international fares. American’s US competitors are expected to follow suit.
The move comes as the price of crude oil topped $50 a barrel – the highest in more than two decades.
American’s vice president-revenue management Scott Nason said: “While we are mindful of keeping fares as low as possible for consumers, we simply must try to offset the substantial increase in fuel costs we continue to experience.”
