Airlines: a return to first class?
Despite all the recent news of cutbacks in perks for airline passengers, an opposite trend is also emerging:
Some airlines are adding incentives for first-class passengers.
US Airways, for example, recently decided on a return of hot meals — at least in the first class seats. First class passengers after 1 August will be given a hot meal.
The airline acted after numerous passenger complaints.
But there are also indications that major airlines are adding more first-class features to distinguish themselves from the low-cost carriers.
Continental Airline is doubling the number of its first-class seats on each of its 757 jets.
A handful of airlines such as American still serve hot meals in first class.
“Airlines that are able to offer extra amenities at a time when others are cutting back may end up with the competitive advantage,” wrote the Washington Post.
What’s next?
Another possible trend from US Air: The carrier started paying bonuses for on-time performance. Continental already does it.
