Amazon couple saved by phoning home

Thursday, 22 September 20113 min read

A couple were saved after their motorhome plunged 30 feet into a ravine in the Amazon jungle by phoning home to relatives in the UK.

Lesley Norris and Bruce Scott took down their GPS co-ordinates and phoned their brother-in-law in Eastbourne, Sussex, on their satellite phone after the accident where a bridge collapsed leaving them stranded.

The alert was passed from Dover Coastguards to their colleagues in Falmouth who control international alerts before being picked up by Brazilian rescue services who sent an army helicopter to rescue the couple the next day, according to the Daily Mail.

Miss Norris, 64, a former British Airways air hostess and Mr Scott, 62, who have been travelling in Central and South American for more than five years, are recovering in a hotel in Manaus, Brazil.
