American Airlines is the latest mainline carrier to ditch single use plastic straws and stirrers.
The airline is moving to ‘eco-friendly flatware’ beginning this month in airport lounges by serving drinks with straw and wood stir sticks.
From November plastic stir sticks will be replaced with those made from bamboo on flights.
The move will eradicate about 71,000 pounds of plastic a year, AA said.
Alaska Airlines recently said that it would get rid of plastic straws and citrus picks beginning this summer.
"We’re cognizant of our impact on the environment and we remain committed to doing our part to sustain the planet for future generations of travelers," said Jill Surdek, American Airlines’ vice president of flight service.
Starbucks this week announced that it would phase out plastic straws in all stores by 2020 and several cruise lines and hotel companies including Hilton have said they will stop supplying various single use plastics.
