An Amtrak train has derailed in Vermont, injuring at least seven people.
The Vermonter train, carrying 98 passengers and four crew came off the rails in Northfield, southwest of Montpelier when the train hit rocks which had fallen on the track.
One person was airlifted to a New Hampshire hospital while six others suffered injuries including neck, back and shoulder pains.
The locomotive and a passenger car fell down an embankment while three other cars derailed.
The National Transportation Safety Board has sent a team to investigate while Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin said there is no indication of driver error or a problem with the condition of the track.
"We don’t have all the details, but this track was rebuilt, it was state-of-the-art track," Shumlin said.
"This was a freak of nature."
The 13-hour journey set off from St. Albans in north Vermont and was due to pass through New York to Washington, DC.
The clearing of the track has begun but it is still unclear how long the section will be out of service.
