Another fatal shark attack in Australia
A teenager has been killed in Australia’s second fatal shark attack in the space of a week – in an area scientists are calling “Grand Central Station” for the predatory fish.
According to The Independent newspaper, 18-year-old Nick Pedersen was surfing at Adelaide’s West Beach when he was attacked by two great white sharks, which pulled him into the water and then tore him into pieces.
Both sharks were reportedly around five metres long. The newspaper states that two sharks working in tandem is seen as a rarity as great whites are normally solitary animals.
As reported by News From Abroad, a 38-year-old man was killed last week while fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, in Queensland.
The newspaper quotes one scientist as saying that the seas off Adelaide were “brimming” with great whites: “If you go swimming in Grand Central Station for sharks, then you have a higher chance of getting attacked.”
It is not out of the question that the same great whites could attack in South Australia and Queensland – satellite tracking has showed the animals have travelled as far as 6,000km in search of prey, The Independent reports.
