Another Thomas Cook refund scam unearthed

Sunday, 06 Oct, 2019 0

Customers are being warned about another Thomas Cook refund scam, which has begun operating just as the Civil Aviation Authority prepares to launch its official refund service.

Consumers association Which? says a fake refund website is encouraging customers to hand over personal information in return for help with their refund claim.

The site, ThomasCookrefunds.com, uses the Thomas Cook logo. However the CAA has confirmed to Which? that the website is fake.

Which? has asked the company hosting the website to take it down.

The CAA is expected to launch its official refund service this week, so customers should ignore alternative websites and unsolicited calls or texts, Which? says.

Shortly after Thomas Cook ceased trading, police warned fraudsters had started targeting customers by phone, offering refunds to those who shared their bank or credit card details.

In another scam, con artists pretending to be from hotels were asking for bank and card details.

Which? Travel editor Rory Boland said: "Fraudsters circle like sharks around financial disasters, so people should be aware that there are likely to be fake refund websites set up to fleece Thomas Cook customers – and some of them may look very convincing.

"Refunds for Thomas Cook customers will either be handled by the CAA from Monday (October 7) or by banks and card providers, so we would urge anyone waiting to claim their money back to ignore alternative websites and unsolicited calls or texts promising a refund."

Which? has issued detailed advice for customers affected by Thomas Cook’s collapse, including how to spot fraudulent websites.
