BA confirms first-class closures
British Airways has confirmed the closure of first-class cabins on six of its services, because of a decrease in the number of sales.
The Guardian this morning reports that the carrier has done away with its premier services on flights from Heathrow to Montreal, Beijing, San Diego, Denver, Calcutta and Dhaka. The newspaper reports that the average price for a first-class return from London to New York is GBP7,300 – for business class it is GBP4,600.
A spokeswoman reportedly told the newspaper: “It is not a secret that the premium travel market has decreased significantly over the last two or three years – that is the reason Concorde is having to go out of service. However, British Airways is committed to providing customers with the best possible service and first class continues on the majority of our long-haul flights.”
BA head of UK and Ireland marketing Jayne O’Brien told TravelMole last month that BA’s First Class product was only “highly profitable” on 15 routes.
A BA press officer this morning told News From Abroad that first class on the six above routes had been discontinued in late August and that the jets in question had already been reconfigured.
