BA pushes up fuel surcharge again
Soaring oil prices have been blamed by British Airways for forcing up fuel surcharges on flights from Monday.
The surcharge on long haul flights will rise from from £16 to £24 per flight sector and from £6 to £8 on short haul sectors.
It is the fifth hike since the airline first imposed a surcharge of £2.50 on all flights in May last year.
BA commercial director Martin George said: “The continuing rise in global oil prices to almost $60 a barrel means a further surcharge increase is regrettably unavoidable.
“We now expect our fuel bill for this financial year to be around £1.6 billion. Our estimated bill for this year will be more than £450 million higher than our fuel costs last year.
“This additional fuel surcharge will help to offset the recent sharp increases in the price of oil.”
