Beijing all-clear for travellers
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has removed its last remaining SARS-related travel recommendation.
The recommendation, that people should postpone all non-essential travel to Beijing, was removed yesterday. It was issued on 23 April.
The WHO say the situation in the Chinese capital, which suffered the most SARS-related deaths at 191, has “improved significantly”. The last reported new case in Beijing was on 29 May.
WHO director-general, Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland said: “This is very good news and shows the great progress the world has made against SARS.”
Toronto and Taiwan are areas still highlighted by WHO as being at risk from spreading infection owing to recent reported cases.
