Blockades cause chaos in Calais
The Foreign Office has warned of ‘significant disruption’ around Calais and ‘limited access’ to Eurotunnel today during a protest against the ‘Jungle’ migrant camp.
The main route out of the port has been blocked by protestors, stopping any vehicles from entering or leaving the town.
In addition, an estimated 80 truck drivers and 100 agricultural vehicles are travelling at a snail’s pace from Dunkirk and Boulogne, slowly making their way to Calais to converge on the A16 into the port.
Traffic is already being held up and the road is expected to be blocked by lunchtime when the truckers arrive.
Ferry companies have advised travellers to allow extra time to get to Calais and Dunkirk and are tweeting out regular updates.
Eurotunnel said it has brought in extra staff to cope with the demonstration.
In Dover, contingency plans are in place to implement Operation Stack if necessary.
The protest, called ‘operation escargot’, has been organised to force the French government to remove the ‘Jungle’ migrant camp in Calais, where an estimated 9,000 people now live.
