Security has been tightened at Cairo Airport after two bombs were discovered near the arrivals hall.

According to unconfirmed reports, one had been placed at the arrivals hall of the terminal used by EgyptAir and the other near a police patrol location. Both have been difused.

Meanwhile, a homemade explosive device has exploded in central Cairo, security officials told Reuters.

Nobody was injured in the blast, which was near a busy square in downtown Cairo.

The bombs at the airport were found by security teams using electronic detection devices.

Security staff are now looking at CCTV footage to try and determine who put them there.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has not yet updated its advice since today’s events, but continues to warn of a ‘heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria’.

"You should be vigilant at this time," it said.

"Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Egypt. Attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without prior warning. Foreigners could be targeted in tourist resorts or other locations frequented by foreigners. Previous attacks have almost exclusively targeted the security forces, their facilities and other government buildings. You should take great care near these places."
