An eight-year-old boy who was pulled out of a swimming pool unresponsive and airlifted from a Caribbean bound ship has died, the New York City medical examiner’s office said.
Prince Adepoju of Maryland died of accidental drowning on July 2 it said, after he was airlifted to a hospital in Staten Island just hours after Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas cruise ship left Bayonne port in New Jersey.
"The cause of death is drowning, with contributing condition of seizure disorder. The manner of death is accidental," a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office said.
He fell into the pool and was in the water up to 10 minutes before he was found, Coast Guard senior chief Steven Allard told The New York Daily News.
The boy was treated by the ship’s medical team as the ship altered its course and returned to port and he remained on life support until he passed away two days later.
"We are heartbroken to learn the news of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this terribly sad time," Royal Caribbean said in a statement on Monday.
