Call for peace through tourism for Olympic Games
The VESTAs marked their transition to a global award by launching its Peace through Tourism initiative at ITB Berlin last week.
Gordon Sillence, Executive Director of the UN Type II DestiNet Portal, hopes to see those countries participating at the Olympic Games in 2012 sign up to the 16 day international truce that should traditionally accompany the event.
"For tourism stakeholders, there is a global opportunity here to promote responsible and sustainable tourism that we cannot afford to miss. We are asking every country to map the best of its sustainable tourism offers and showcase them within the Olympic marketing machine to give the industry an economic boost and provide our citizens a sense of relief from all the doom-and -gloom international news that negatively affects our cultural perspectives and travel plans."
At a time when we need global peace as the fundament of an international tourism industry, an Olympic multi-stakeholder effort is required from us all, especially by those who govern us, and are in positions of power and influence.
The DestiNet site offers each country access to information on how to contribute to the Olympic Truce, showing that the process cannot be left to politicians alone, but must include both top down and bottom up processes.
