Canterbury provides dramatic backdrop for Narnia movie
Canterbury, gateway to New Zealand’s South Island, provides some of the film world’s most dramatic scenery, captured spectacularly in the new movie The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: The Chronicles of Narnia.
Regional Tourism Organisation, Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing and local tourism operators are excited by the opportunities for Canterbury as a result of its international exposure through Disney’s new movie.
General Manager, Marketing, Chris Griffin said Narnia came hard on the heels of the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and would once again trigger huge interest in Canterbury’s scenic landscapes.
“Large dramatic sections of the movie were shot in Canterbury’s high country, which although remote is still very accessible to Christchurch city and international airport, just 90 minutes west.”
“Canterbury was delighted to welcome over 600 cast and crew here last year, and the resulting promotion for the movie is extremely valuable for tourism to this region,” Chris Griffin said.
Now, visitors to Christchurch can tour the areas in which the film was made and view Narnia themselves.
Flock Hill Station, near the magnificent Arthur’s Pass in Canterbury, was the setting for the climactic final battle between Aslan’s forces and the powerful army of the White Witch, led by the fierce minotaur, General Otman. The battle is one of the most spectacular Hollywood has seen yet, with the snowcapped Southern Alps serving as a backdrop as the two sides ride into war. Arthur’s Pass National Park is known for its wild mountain scenery, which includes glaciers and dramatic waterfalls.
Exclusive access to the Flock Hill locations is available via Canterbury Sightseeing Tours. This local tour, in conjunction with Flock Hill Station, is charged with protecting the stunning high country environment in which this movie was filmed.
Full and half day tours from Christchurch city give access to the scenery, as well as chance to look at the actors’ costumes and weaponry. Helicopter trips up to Aslan’s rock with stunning views of the giant mountain scenery are also available. Visitors can choose to stay in the area overnight at luxury Grasmere Lodge.
