Chinese airport is ramping up the pressure on errant drone users by offering hard cash to ‘informants.’
Kunming Changshui International Airport in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province is setting up a hotline and offering cash for information on sightings of drone use close to the airport.
A reward of 1,000 yuan ($146) is offered for information.
The hotline comes after several recent sightings within the airport"s restricted zone.
Xinhua News Agency reported five close calls involving drones in just the last few days.
Airports in Shenzhen and Mianyang both reported ‘flying objects’ last week causing minor disruptions in flight operations.
There is thought to be about 20,000 drones in operation in China and only about half are licensed, said Ke Yubao, secretary-general of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of China (AOPA).
"Most drone buyers are just armchair pilots, so they need to be educated in safe use and about risks," Hou Min, deputy director of the AOPA, told the Global Times
