Christmas in Myrtle Beach

By Graham MxKenzie
Myrtle Beach in December: Picture this: the sun setting over the Atlantic, the salty breeze carrying the scent of the ocean, and the twinkling lights of the holiday season casting a magical glow over everything.
It was like the beginning of a Hallmark Christmas Movie.
For people who want to break away from the pre-festive pressure build up at home or just want to chill but remain in that seasonal mood then have a close look at Myrtle Beach. I was booked into the SpringHill Suites, a charming beachfront hotel that offers views of the ocean. The first week of December is the perfect time to visit, as the crowds have thinned out, and the weather is still mild enough to enjoy long walks on the beach.
At this point in the movie the New York executive comes home for the holidays and bumps into an old flame maybe at the Alabama Theatre to catch “The South’s Grandest Christmas Show.” The theatre is decked out in festive decorations, and the show is a dazzling display of holiday cheer, complete with singing, dancing, and a visit from Santa Claus himself. Movie or no movie it’s difficult not to feel the magic of the season.
After the show by way of complete contrast it’s off to the Crocodile Rocks Dueling Piano Bar. The lively atmosphere and talented pianists create the perfect setting for a fun and memorable night including joining in on the sing-alongs, laughing and dancing. It is highly likely that you will leave with a big grin on your face that will last until you wake the next morning.
The next morning along with the grin you can wake up to the sound of waves crashing on the shore and head to Tidal Creek Brewhouse for brunch. This cosy restaurant offers a perfect pick me up and the menu is full of Southern-inspired dishes such as Shrimp and Grits (when in Rome!) AM Quesadilla and Breakfast Burritos. After brunch, and as its Christmas, why not do some shopping at the very comfortable Market Commons, a charming outdoor shopping centre that you can stroll along without bumping into hordes of others.
Whilst in the world of global brands we live in it’s difficult to get something unique, Market Commons does have a fair percentage of boutique and specialty stores that you won’t find elsewhere. Needless to say, the big and more recognised names are there as well.
Now it’s time to experience a some of the natural assets of the destination and what better than exploring the Marsh Walk, a scenic boardwalk that winds through the marshlands at Murrells Inlet. If you have a decent camera then make sure you bring it along as in amongst the peaceful surroundings you will undoubtedly get sight of wildlife and most probably wildlife that you will not see on your local mill pond.
As the sun begins to set embark on a sunset and sea life eco tour by boat. The tour goes along the coast, where, once again you will spot non-mill pond wildlife, like dolphins playing in the waves. The breath-taking views of the sunset over the ocean creates a Hallmark-picture-perfect moment.
When in the south it is always exciting to take on some local culture so next on the agenda was some shagging lessons, no not what you are thinking but a popular dance style in the Carolinas. After several attempts I had to admit defeat but some others in the group had obviously found their muse and were shagging with the best of them. Under the tutelage of the expert instructors, it was however fun and enjoyable, causing much merriment.
The climax of this yuletide trip was a visit to Brookgreen Gardens for “A Night of a Thousand Candles.” The gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland, with thousands of candles illuminating the pathways and creating a magical ambiance. Imaginative decorations illuminate the park to make it truly a Winter Wonderland and each night they have a ceremonial lighting of a giant tree. You can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, ‘avec ou sans’ alcohol, by the many fires that are dotted around. Wonderful memories.
For an unforgettable farewell experience, don’t miss the House of Blues Gospel Brunch at Christmas. This unique event combines a delicious Southern-style buffet with enormous choices of southern style food plus uplifting gospel performances from a four-piece band. Enjoy classic dishes like fried chicken, biscuits and gravy washed down with Mimosas while listening to soulful gospel music that will leave you feeling inspired, energised and like you really are in a Hallmark Christmas Movie.
