Clean-up begins after Bali quake
Bali was clearing up today after a powerful earthquake left at least 56 people injured, damaged dozens of buildings and caused panic among visitors to the island.
The 6.1-magnitude quake, which struck 100 kilometers southwest of Denpasar, hit at 11:16 a.m. local time on Thursday and lasted several minutes.


Most of those injured were hit by concrete debris breaking off from buildings as well as falling roof beams and tiles.
Sanglah General Hospital, where most of the injured were taken, reported that dozens of people were treated for minor head wounds although most of those injured had been treated and allowed to go home. 


“There are seven others in intensive care because of the severity of their injuries, two of whom are eight-year-old children,†a hospital spokesman told then Jakarta Globe.
Of the 56 reported injured, 30 were students and teachers from a state school in Denpasar, where the roof fell in on the schoolhouse. 


Kuta’s main street, Sunset Road, was hit hard by the tremor, with cracks forming on the facade of several buildings. 


“Hundreds of people ran onto the streets. It was chaos. So many people tried to drive off that the traffic came to a standstill,†said one eyewitness.


Candy Juliani, a spokeswoman for the Sanur Beach Hotel, said guests came spilling out of their rooms when the shaking began.

“Fortunately, we’d been trained in disaster response just two days ago, so we managed to calm people quickly,†she said.
