Contingency plans in place for Heathrow strike tomorrow

Thursday, 11 September 20143 min read

Extra staff are being drafted in at Heathrow tomorrow to cope with a 24-hour ground handlers strike.

The airport said it was bringing in extra ‘passenger ambassadors’ to help minimise any disruption or confusion for passengers.

Meanwhile ASIG, which handles baggage at Terminals 1, 2 and 3, has contingency plans in place and is also putting on additional workers.

But despite the contingency plans, Heathrow is still urging passengers to allow extra time to travel through thr airport and has advised them to speak to their airlines if they have any concerns.

Tomorrow’s strike was called after talks between the union Unite and the management of ASIG broke down earlier this week.

Unite, which represents more than 500 of ground handlers at the three Heathrow terminals, is in a long-running dispute with the management over pay.

The union claims a delayed 2013 pay award should have been implemented 14 months ago.

The strike will run from 00.01 for 24 hours, affecting both departing and arriving flights. Unite said flight check-in will also be hit.
