Coolum eyes new era
The newly-branded Coolum Golf and Spa is promising a "new era" for the Queensland resort following a messy spat between owner Clive Palmer and the previous managers, Hyatt.
In February, Palmer ended a 25-year association between the global hospitality company and the flagship Sunshine Coast property, Hyatt Coolum.
The mining entrepreneur said at the time poor performances by Hyatt on behalf of the owners and their lack of consultation and commitment with resort staff were the main reasons behind the decision.
New general Manager Bill Schoch said the transition symbolised a new era for the iconic property and its 650 staff.
Schoch, a director of Palmer’s Brisbane-based Coeur de Lion Investments, said Hyatt Corporation had accepted a management payout.
And in contrast to what his boss was saying in February, Schoch said, "Hyatt has played an important role in managing and developing the resort over 25 years," adding, "we now have exciting plans for the property that will push it even further to the forefront of Australian tourism."
Palmer has set up a $2 billion kitty to re-energise tourism in Queensland, "and Coolum Golf and Spa has a central role to play in the Queensland and Australian tourism sector as we move ahead", Schoch said.
Coolum Golf and Spa will remain the home of the Australian PGA Golf Championship.
