Defective bracket found after Baltimore Airport jet bridge collapse

Wednesday, 2 January 20193 min read

A faulty metal bracket was discovered during the post-accident inspection of a jet bridge at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

The Maryland Department of Transportation made the discovery after six people were injured on a jet bridge as they deplaned from a Southwest Airlines flight last weekend.

The jet bridge collapsed as medical personnel were helping a passenger off the plane.

All six were released from hospital the following day.

The airport said the accident didn’t impact operations

Officials said 33 jet bridges were examined after the accident and a further five with brackets made by the same manufacturer were taken out of service as a precaution.

They will remain out of service until the parts are replaced.

"Our passengers’ safety is the top priority and BWI Marshall Airport has moved quickly to address this issue," state transportation secretary Pete Rahn said.
