Defective coffee maker forces Southwest Airlines emergency landing

Wednesday, 13 December 20173 min read

A Southwest Airlines plane was forced to divert shortly after take-off from Orlando due to a coffee maker malfunction.

The coffee maker in the back of the aircraft emitted fumes and Flight 1539 destined for Houston landed a short time later at Pensacola International Airport.

All passengers and crew were deplaned in Pensacola but the plane was deemed safe to continue its journey after the machine was checked, said airline spokesman Brian Parrish.

Parrish said the smell of fumes at the back of the aircraft sparked the diversion which was determined to have come from a coffee maker in the cabin.

Just days earlier another Southwest flight was nearly up in smoke after a passenger’s bizarre meltdown, after being ordered not to smoke mid-flight.

After being caught lighting up in the bathroom, Valerie Curbelo, 24, went on a rant, threatening to kill everyone onboard the flight and had to be subdued for the remainder of the flight to Sacramento.

She was charged with making criminal threats.
