Delta Air Lines is teaming up with Georgia Tech to develop autonomous vehicle technology.
It’s not looking to rival Uber but hopes to develop a feasible driver-less vehicle option to help airport operations.
It is also collaborating with the Curiosity Lab and will get access to the Curiosity Lab’s autonomous vehicle testing track.
"Autonomous vehicle technology is one of those innovations we see as having the potential to improve employee safety, the customer experience and operational performance, and this partnership will help us explore all of those possibilities," said Gil West, Delta’s chief operating officer.
One practical use for an autonomous vehicle could be to help ferry passengers with tight flight connections around the airport, Delta said.
Low-speed autonomous shuttle buses on fixed routes are already being piloted at various airports, campuses, resorts and theme parks globally.
Last year Incheon International Airport completed a successful test of a driver-less bus along a 2km route used by other conventional vehicles.
