It is one of the smallest country in Europe, doubly landlocked between Austria and Switzerland. The Principality of Liechtenstein has only a total area of 160 km2 (ten times less than Greater London) with a population of 41,000.
However, Liechtenstein proves that great adventures can come in small packages. Stretching 75 kilometers from south to north, the Liechtenstein Trail is a unique long-distance route that crosses an entire country on a single marked trail, offering travelers the chance to discover the Alpine principality on foot or by bike.
Marketed under the slogan “One country. One way.”, the trail links all 11 municipalities, combining mountain scenery, medieval castles, vineyards, cultural attractions and panoramic viewpoints into a journey that can be completed over several days.
The route is designed for both experienced hikers and casual walkers. It can be divided into manageable daily stages, allowing visitors to explore Liechtenstein at their own pace. Cyclists can also tackle much of the trail, making it an attractive option for active travelers seeking a compact European adventure.
Among the highlights is Vaduz, the capital, where visitors can admire the hilltop Vaduz Castle, home to the Princely Family, stroll through the pedestrian-friendly town center and visit the Liechtenstein National Museum and the Art Museum Liechtenstein, renowned for its modern and contemporary art collections.
Further along the trail, the medieval town of Balzers is dominated by the beautifully preserved Gutenberg Castle, one of the country’s best-known landmarks. The route also passes through traditional wine-growing villages, peaceful forests and nature reserves, with spectacular views across the Rhine Valley and neighboring Switzerland and Austria.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy sections leading into the Alpine foothills around Triesenberg, where traditional Walser culture remains strong and scenic mountain panoramas reward hikers throughout the year.
Adding a digital dimension to the experience is the LIstory app. Using location-based technology, it shares stories, historical events, local legends and cultural insights as travelers progress along the route, creating an interactive journey through Liechtenstein’s past and present.
Visitors can also take advantage of luggage transfer services, allowing them to hike with only a daypack while their bags are transported between accommodations. To help lowering the cost of a Liechtenstein holiday -the Principalty is far of being a “bargain” destination-, visitors can buy the “ALL INCLUSIVE Adventure Pass”. Over 20 attractions and offers, including the use of public transport, are available with the Adventure Pass for free.
With excellent public transportation connecting every stage, flexible itineraries and numerous attractions packed into just 75 kilometers, the Liechtenstein Trail offers one of Europe’s most accessible hiking experiences while promising to be an unusual destination to talk about!
