The Dreamworld theme park, which reopened three weeks ago after a deadly accident, remains in the doldrums.
The park has been described as a ‘virtual ghost town’ in media reports with customers staying away in droves, despite it being the busiest holiday period of the year.
Two months after the tragic deaths of Cindy Low, Kate Goodchild, Luke Dorsett and Roozi Araghi on a water rafting ride, many of its other thrill rides remain closed for further safety audits.
To combat this, owner Ardent Leisure has slashed admission prices, extended opening hours and now offers free food for kids but has failed to win over customers in large numbers.
"It was a very, very quiet day. Even with most of the rides still shut, we didn’t have to line up for more than five minutes on any given ride. It’s very unusual given the time of year," Season-pass holder Samantha Edwards said during a New Year visit.
Ardent Leisure would not disclose the number of visitors over the holiday period but rival parks said they had a busy New Year weekend with lines of an hour or more at popular rides.
"Village Roadshow Theme Parks is experiencing a solid school holidays period, with Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast operating with extended hours throughout the period," a spokesman for operator Village Roadshow said.
