Paperwork for the family holiday is set to become more cumbersome next year under new regulations concerning medical insurance.
The changes concern the E111 form, which covers UK travellers in the event of a medical emergency whilst travelling in Europe.
Previously a family travelling together would be able to fill out a family application, but now families are required to give details of each family member.
Although this can be filled out in a single application form, each person travelling, regardless of age, has to carry their own E111.The E111, which is used by less than a fifth of UK travellers, entitles the holder to any medical treatment that becomes necessary during a temporary visit and should be presented to a doctor or hospital for free treatment, or treatment at reduced cost.Another change to the E111 procedure will see holidaymakers issued with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which will be circulated from the middle of next year.
The Post Office is issuing a warning to travellers that were issued with an E111 before August 19 and plan to travel after December 31 when the changes come into effect. These people will not be covered in a medical emergency.
