Elderly British tourist dies snorkeling in Australia
An elderly British tourist has died while snorkeling after being plucked out of the sea in South Australia after an apparent heart attack.
The 80-year old was pulled from the water at Port Noarlunga, 30km south of Adelaide on Sunday, but was unable to be revived.
Life savers and an ambulance crew had battled to resuscitate the man for more than an hour but he never gained consciousness and died at the scene.
The man, who has not yet been named, was snorkelling with his son at the time.
There has been concern over the high number of deaths of snorkelers last year with most elderly or having pre-existing medical conditions.
This included 10 on the Great Barrier Reef in 2016, which the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators said was about twice the industry average.
A 63-year old British tourist died while snorkelling at the Reef last February, also attributed to cardiac arrest.
