Escalating cruise fuel surcharges surging
Cruise lines are increasingly adding fuel charges to counter the cost of escalating gasoline prices, a trend that shows no signs of slowing down.
NCL Corporation is among those announcing it will begin assessing guests a fuel supplement in response to record high fuel prices.
“Effective on all new NCL and NCL America bookings made on or after December 1, 2007, the fuel supplement will be $7 per person per day for the first and second guests in a stateroom and $3 per person per day for any additional guests in the same stateroom,” says the cruise line.
“With oil prices skyrocketing, the fuel supplement is a necessary step for us,” said Colin Veitch, NCL’s president and CEO.
Others who have followed suit include:
ü The world’s biggest cruise ship operator, Carnival Corp, became the first major cruise company to impose a fuel surcharge of US$5 per day to help them cope with the soaring cost of fuel.
ü Silversea Cruises has implemented a fuel surcharge for $10 per passenger per day. The line made the announcement in a letter to travel agents.
ü Two Seattle cruise lines — Windstar Cruises and Majestic America Line — will enact an $8.50 fuel surcharge on passengers.
The cruise lines, which are both owned by Ambassadors International Inc., of Newport Beach, Calif., said the surcharges were enacted “due to escalating fuel prices.”
