Escaped crabs delay US Airways flight

A US airways flight at New York LaGuardia suffered a delay taking-off due to ‘some seafood cargo problems’ a spokesman said.

What was originally announced to passengers as a ‘mechanical problem,’ turned out to be something very different.

A shipment of live crabs managed to free themselves in the cargo hold causing a delay to US Airways flight 890 bound for Charlotte as crew were sent down to the hold to clean up.

The seafood snafu meant the flight took off around 30 minutes late and arrived safely at its destination, the spokesman said.

After hearing the real reason for the short delay, many passengers found it both odd and amusing and began tweeting about the incident.

‘Here’s a new one. Flight delayed because box of live crabs broke open and cargo bay. Crew chasing around crabs now. #DeadliestCatch,’ tweeted Corrie Harding.
