Sustainable Tourism Masterplan to boost tourism benefits

In a bid to optimize the revenue from its below-par performing tourism sector, Ethiopia has said that it is in the process of formulating a Sustainable Tourism Master Plan.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn is to establish the National Tourism Transformation Council with the Ethiopian Tourism Organisation which is to spearhead tourism product development and marketing.

And it is right to say that Ethiopia has an astonishing world heritage of tourism assets. Listed by UNESCO alone there is the amazing rock-hewn churches at Lailibella, the ruins of the ancient city of Aksum, the fortress-city of Fasil Ghebbi, The fortified historic town of Harar, Konso Cultural Landscape, The palaeontological sites of the Awash valley, the prehistoric site near Lake Turkana, the world-renowned lower valley of the Omo, and the  Simien National Park,

Ethiopia is rated as high as 38 in the world cultural heritage list, attracts some 550,000 tourists annually and already generates some 12.3% of its revenue through tourism but there are many, many more opportunities.

The government has said that the process of formulating the STMP has entailed extensive field missions across the country, in-depth interviews with key stakeholders drawn from various sectors including public, private, professional organisations, civil society, regional government officials and academia.

In addition, two regional consultative meetings have been already been held in Mekele and Dire Dawa including another which took place in Addis Ababa between 30th and 31st of July 2014.
